LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 ranked UCLA softball team improved to 33-0 on the season Sunday, sweeping No. 7 Stanford 1-0 and 6-1 in a doubleheader at UCLAs Easton Softball Stadium. With the two victories, UCLA ties its best start ever, as the Bruins 1992 team started 33-0, en route to winning the NCAA Championship that season.
UCLA left fielder Amanda Freed was the Bruins game-one hero, as her two-out RBI-single to left in the bottom of the seventh, broke a scoreless tie and gave UCLA the 1-0 victory. Bruin pitcher Courtney Dale improved to 15-0 on the season, allowing six hits and no runs, including five strikeouts.
In game two, UCLA broke open a scoreless contest in the third inning, scoring five runs on five hits, including a string of four-straight doubles. Julie Marshall got things started, as her two-RBI double to left field ignited the Bruin rally. She was followed by a Stacey Nuvemans two-RBI double that put UCLA up 4-0. After that, Julie Adams notched an RBI double, however was thrown out at third trying to extend it to a triple. Lyndsey Klein capped the Bruin rally with her team-leading 12th double of the season. Freed, UCLAs game-two starter, struck out six, allowing just four hits in the 6-1 Bruin victory. She is now 15-0 on the year.
Stanford was led on the afternoon by game-one pitcher Marcy Crouch, who gave up just six hits and no earned runs in the 1-0 UCLA victory. Kelly Wiginton led the Cardinal at the plate, going 3-for-7 on the day.
