SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Stanford University opened its 1998-99 dual meet campaign with a 27-12 win at San Francisco State (0-1) on Tuesday night at Main Gymnasium.
The Cardinal took the lead for good at 165 pounds when Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) posted a 16-4 majority decision over Aaron Stanton (San Diego, CA/Skyline JC). Stanford then took a commanding 21-12 lead at 174 pounds after Shane Cross (Douglas, WI/Douglas HS) pinned the Gators' Shane Clark (Vacaville, CA/Vacaville HS) in 4:47.
Stanford's Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS), who is ranked 12th in the nation at 133 pounds, improved to 5-0 on the season with a 20-4 technical fall over Kelly Martinez (Norwalk, CA/Cerritos JC). Zimmerer opened the season with a first-place finsh at the All-California Open in Fullerton on November 14.
This weekend, Stanford hits the road for Pac-10 matches at Portland State (Saturday @ 7:30 p.m.) and Oregon State (Sunday @ 2:00 p.m.).
