STANFORD, Calif - The Stanford University softball team swept a doubleheader from Santa Clara (6-32) on Sunday afternoon at the Stanford Softball Complex. Stanford (21-4) took game one by a 9-1 score, then took game two by a 13-3 margin.
In the first game, the Cardinal first got on the board in the second inning thanks to a one-out sacrifice fly by senior Michele Acosta that scored Robin Walker. Six of the first seven Stanford batters then got base hits to begin the third as the Cardinal raced out to a 5-0 lead. With two outs in that inning, sophomore Jenni Shideler hit a three-run home run to provide an 8-0 score. Starting pitcher Marcy Crouch was just as impressive as she gave up just one hit in four innings of work to raise her record to 9-3. A Third Team All-American last season, Crouch also went 2-for-2 with with an RBI and a run scored
The Santa Clara defense was the big difference in game two as five errors by the Broncos and 14 Stanford hits led to the victory. The Cardinal scored five runs in the second inning thanks to five hits and two SCU errors as Stanford got out to a 5-0 lead. A on e-out triple by Ramona Shelburne in the third inning plated three more runs as the Cardinal put the game away. Santa Clara responded to score three runs in fourth to make it an 8-3 game, but Stanford scored five more runs in the bottom of the inning to provide the final margin of victroy. The offensive star for Stanford in game two was Walker, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Crouch (10-3) got the win in game two as pitched the first three innings, giving up just one hit and no runs.
