FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton won the final match by one point to claim a 22-18 win over Stanford in Fullerton Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal finishes the regular season with a 4-7 overall record and a 2-5 Pac-10 mark in dual meets. The Titans are 1-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-10.
Stanford freshman Andy Hunter (Sacramento, CA/Hiram Johnson) bounced back from a loss to the nation's top-ranked heavyweight the night before to record his first pin of the season Sunday. Hunter stopped Fullerton senior Jonathan DyReyes late in the first round. Junior Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central) claimed a forfeit victory at 133 pounds while senior Beau Weiner (Placerville, CA/Ponderosa) and junior Tim Kendall (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) also recorded wins for Stanford.
In the final match, at 165 pounds, Stanford junior Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro) shook off a first-period knee injury to tie his bout with a takedown in the last minute. But Steve Duran had accumulated a 1:12 advantage in riding time during the match, giving him an extra point at the end of the contest, and a 6-5 victory. Stanford hosts the 1999 Pac-10 Championships, Feb. 27-28 in Burnham Pavilion.
