STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA/Merced) scored four goals but it was not enough as No. 2 Stanford (18-5) fell 7-6 in overtime to No. 4 UCLA (18-8) in the third-place game at the MPSF Tournament at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the UCLA campus.
The Bruins scored two quick goals to open the game, but sophomore Hilary Gallogly (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) tallied, and then Dingeldein scored three consecutive goals to put Stanford ahead 4-2. The Bruins tied the game at four, and again at five after Cardinal sophomore Kris Koblik (Davis, CA/Davis) scored. The Bruins led 6-5 going into the final quarter, but Dingeldein scored and the Cardinal hit the post twice in the last two minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. UCLA's Elaine Zivich scored an early goal in overtime and Stanford was unable to equalize. Stanford senior Heather Crary (Atherton, CA/Menlo School) finished with 10 saves and Erin Golaboski had six for the Bruins.
Dingeldein was named to the MPSF all-tournament first team after scoring 11 goals in five games over three days.
Stanford returns to deGuerre Pool this Friday for a game with No. 6 UC Davis at 4:00 p.m.
