FULLERTON, Calif. - The ninth-ranked Stanford softball squad was a team on a mission this weekend at the Cal State Fullerton Easton Showcase. Not onlydid the Cardinal (19-4) win the tournament with a 6-0 record, but Stanfordoutscored its opponents 55-2. Sunday was more of the same as the Cardinaldefeated the host Titans 4-0 and then overwhelmed Portland State 9-0.
In the win over CS Fullerton (10-7), Stanford scored two early runsin the first inning. Freshman Sarah Beeson had a two-out single that scoredKellie Wiginton and Michelle Schneider. Stanford would later score singleruns in the fourth and fith innings to provide the 4-0 margin of victory.Pitcher Marcy Crouch had a one-out single that scored Beeson in the fourth,while Jessica Mendoza had a two-out single that plated Jennie Foyle in thefifth.
Those runs were all that the Cardinal would need as Crouch limitedthe Titans to five hits and struck out four. With the complete game victory, Crouch now has 18 career shutouts and improves her record to 8-3this season.
The Cardinal was even more impressive in game two as the team scored all of its runs in the first three innings on the way to the win over the Vikings (3-14). Freshman Robin Walker paced Stanford as she had two hits, three RBI and a run scored. Foyle also helped out the Cardinal asshe had a 2-for-3 evening with two runs scored.
The most amazing part of the whole evening was senior Becky Blevins' no-hitter. Though the game lasted only five innings due to the "Mercy Rule," Blevins (11-1) still limited the Vikings to no hits and struckout five. The no-hitter was the third of Blevins' collegiate career.
