Cardinal Rebounds with Pair of Victories over San Jose State

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University Softball team swept San Jose Statein a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the StanfordSoftball Complex. The Cardinal took game one by a 7-1 score, then won gametwo by a 6-0 decision. With the wins, #10 Stanford moves to 34-15 overallwhile San Jose State drops to 13-41 overall.

In the first game, Stanford took an early 3-0 lead on a three-runhome run by Jessica Mendoza in the bottom of the first inning. The Cardinaladded a single run in the third on a two-out RBI triple by Robin Walkerthat scored Michelle Schneider from second base. Schneider reached base ona bunt single and then moved to second on a stolen base. Stanford concludedits scoring with two more runs in the fifth. Walker had another two-outbase hit that scored Kellie Wiginton and then Marcy Crouch singeled inWalker to make the score 7-0. On the mound, Crouch (19-7) took the win asshe limited the Spartans to six hits.

Game two saw Stanford jump out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning.After Sarah Beeson reached base on an error to lead off the inning, MicheleAcosta hit a two-out double to right field that scored Beeson. The nextbatter, Christina Chao, then singled up the middle to score Acosta. TheCardinal later scored two more in the third inning. With the bases loadedand one out, Walker singled up the middle to score Wiginton, who led offthe inning with a base hit. Crouch, the next batter up, then walked toscore Schneider , who also reached base on a single. In the fourth, Stanfordfinished off the scoring with two more runs. A one-out single by Mendozascored Jennie Foyle and another base hit by Walker brought around Mendozato score. For the afternoon, Walker went 4-for-6 with 5 RBI and one runscored. Senior Becky Blevins (15-8) took the win in game two as she limitedSJSU to two hits and tossed the 34th shutout of her carrer

Stanford returns to action this Saturday, April 24th when the teamhosts #4 Washington in a Pac-10 doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm. Thefollowing day, Sunday, April 25th, #1 UCLA comes to town and will play theCardinal in another Pac-10 doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
