Cardinal Earns Split on Day Two of MPSF Championships

LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked Stanford women's water polo team beat No. 8 San Diego State 8-4 and lost to No. 3 Cal 5-3 Saturday on the second day of the MPSF Tournament at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the UCLA campus. The Cardinal (18-4) will play No. 4 UCLA in the third-place game Sunday at 11:45 a.m.

Freshman Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA/Merced) scored three goals and hit the post on her fourth shot, all in the first quarter, to stake the Cardinal to an early lead against the Aztecs. Stanford scored four more times in the second quarter to lead 7-0 at halftime and cruised from there. Freshman Kate Pettit (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge) added a pair of goals and senior goalie Heather Crary (Atherton, CA/Menlo School) made 11 saves in three quarters of work.

In the last game of the day, sophomore Kelly Shouey (Concord, CA/Carondelet) opened the scoring against the Golden Bears, but Cal scored two first-quarter goals and never trailed again. Stanford also got goals from sophomores Anne- Marie Keenan (Woodside, CA/Menlo School) and Dani Bell (Long Beach, CA/Wilson). Crary made seven saves. Senior Melanie vonHartitzsch (Tulsa, OK/Booker T. Washington) and sophomore Beth Irwin (Menlo Park, CA/Menlo-Atherton) scored twice each for the Bears, and sophomore Fana Fuqua (Menlo Park, CA/Menlo- Atherton) made eight saves.

Stanford will meet the Bruins for the third time this season on Sunday. The Cardinal had never defeated the Bruins before this seson, but are 2-0 against UCLA in 1999.
