STANFORD, Calif. - Tracye Lawyer, the 1998 Pacific-10 heptathlon champion, won 200 meters, the high jump and the long jump to lead the Cardinal women's track & field team to a 92-71 victory over California in the 20th annual Big Meet on Saturday at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Lawyer won the 200 meters in a 24.86, the high jump at 5-8, and the long jump in a season-best leap of 18-9 1/4. Lawyer also placed second in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 14.17.
Stanford's Melissa Feinstein became the third collegiate athlete to clear 13-0 or better in the pole vault. Feinstein set a career-best and school record of 13-0 1/4.
The Cardinal women swept four events (first, second, third) in upping their series with the Golden Bears to 11-9.
Elissa Riedy won the 800 and 1,500 meters to lead the Golden Bears.
The California men's team beat Stanford, 90-73, as Wayne Boddy won the 200 and 400 meters in times of 21.95 and 47.74, respectively. Boddy also ran the anchor leg on Cal's winning 400 meter relay team.
Cal's victory over the Stanford men extends its series lead to 62-41-2.
Three Big Meet records were broken during this year's meet. Jason Balkman of Stanford won the 5,000 meters in a time of 13:52.85, eclipsing the old mark of 14:03.18 set by Brad Hauser of Stanford in 1998. Feinstein broke her own women's pole vault record of 12-0 set last year with a leap of 13-0 1/4. Cal's Jennifer Joyce set the meet record in the hammer with a throw of 183-9. The old mark was 172-9 set by Nadia Lopez of Cal in 1998.
