TEMPE, Ariz.- Arizona State freshman infielder Missy Hixon hitthe game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning of the second game to helpthe seventh-ranked ASU softball team (33-13, 4-8 Pac-10) take consecutiveshutouts against #10 Stanford (32-13, 4-8 Pac-10), 6-0, 1-0
Freshman pitcher Kirsten Voak pitched a complete game in the firstgame, striking out seven while giving up five hits. Voak recorded her200th strikeout of her career in the first inning against Cardinal catcherKellie Wiginton. Freshman Erica Beach went 2-for-4, scoring one run andalso hitting a homer. She is now tied for first on the team for home runswith Chris Gill and Voak. They each have five homers. Centerfielder JenLangenhuizen went 2-for-2, scoring twice. Freshman Nichole Thompson andjunior Julie Adolph also scored runs. Four Sun Devils had doubles in thegame.
The second game remained scoreless through the eighth inning. ASUshortstop Holly Smith hit a routine fly ball to right field, but Cardinaloutfielder Michele Acosta misplayed the ball, allowing Smith to advance tothird. Hixon came up to the plate and hit the game-winning single inbetween the shortstop and second baseman. Beach threw 7.2 innings oftwo-hit ball, striking out four batters.
The Sun Devils continue their homestand against the CaliforniaGolden Bears on Saturday, April 17 at 6 p.m. at the Sun Devil Club Stadiumin Tempe, Ariz.
