Women's Water Polo Team Bests Hawai'i 8-4

STANFORD, CA - Third-ranked Stanford jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to an 8-4 victory over No. 6 Hawai'i in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Wednesday afternoon at deGuerre Pool. The Cardinal improves to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in MPSF play, while the Rainbow Wahine fall to 6-5, 0-1.

Stanford had seven different players score its first seven goals. Freshman Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA/Merced) iced the game with her second goal of the game on a breakaway with 26 seconds remaining. Hawai'i was led by junior All-American Katie Hill (Merced, CA/Golden Valley) with two goals, both in the third period. Senior All-American Heather Crary (Atherton, CA/Menlo School) made 10 saves to lead the Cardinal defense. Freshman Christa Tackaberry (Paia, HI/San Pasqual) had seven saves for the Rainbow Wahine.

Sophomore All-American Kris Koblik (Davis, CA/Davis) opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game with a 6-on-5 goal. Sophomore Dani Bell (Long Beach, CA/Wilson), the Cardinal's leading scorer, tallied 38 seconds later to extend the lead. Sophomores Hilary Gallogly (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) and Kelly Shouey (Concord, CA/Carondelet) scored 54 seconds apart late in the first period, and freshman Kate Pettit (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge) made it 5-0 late in the second. Sophomore Mandy Crawford (Irvine, CA/Irvine) got Hawai'i on the board just before halftime. Dingeldein made it 6-1, but Hill scored twice to bring the Rainbow Wahine within three at 6-3. Sophomore Anne-Marie Keenan (Woodside, CA/Menlo School) extended the Cardinal lead to 7-3. Sophomore Amy Morrow (Las Vegas, NV/Chaparral) scored for the visitors to make it 7-4 with 4:05 remaining, but Stanford's defense held and Dingeldein scored again late for the final margin.

Stanford returns to action one week from Saturday at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational (Feb. 27-28). Hawai'i continues its mainland swing with a non-league game against UC Santa Cruz and an MPSF game at No. 9 San Jose State Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
