Cardinal Sweeps No. 12 Oregon

STANFORD, CA - The Stanford University Softball team swept 12th-rankedOregon in a Pac-10 doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the StanfordSoftball Complex. The Cardinal took game one by a 3-2 score, then won gametwo by a 4-3 decision. With the wins, #8 Stanford moves to 32-11 overall,4-6 in the Pac-10, while Oregon drops to 30-13, 5-5 in the Pac-10.

In the first game, Stanford took the early lead with a single runin the second inning. Oregon responded with two runs in the fourth. Withtwo outs, the Ducks had three straight doubles, including the last one byAlana Burns that scored Christie Shelton to make the score 2-1. However,the Cardinal was not to be out done. In the sixth inning, Robin Walkerdoubled off the leg of the Oregon pitcher and then scored on a single byMarcy Crouch to tie the game. Two outs later, catcher Kellie Wiginton hit adouble to left center that scored Ramon Shelburne from third with thewinning run. For the game, Stanford was led by Walker, who went 2-for-3with two runs scored. Senior Marcy Crouch (18-5) took the win as shelimited the Ducks to seven hits and struck out six.

Game two saw Stanford jump out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Adouble by freshman Jessica Mendoza scored Jennie Foyle and Wiginton in thefirst inning. The Cardinal scored two more in third when a two-out error byOregon 2B Katie Mackey prolonged the inning. A single by Crouch scoredGellman with the third run and another error by the Ducks, this time by SSHolly Ray, allowed Walker to score, making it 4-0. The Ducks battled back,however, as they scored a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth.Oregon had a chance to tie the game in the seventh with runners on secondand third and one out, but, Crouch came in out of the bullpen to shutdownthe Ducks and pickup the save.

Stanford returns to action next weekend when the Cardinal travelsto face Arizona State and Arizona . The Cardinal's next home game isTuesday, April 20th, when it hosts San Jose State in a doubleheaderbeginning at 1:00 pm.
