Post-match Quotes

Stanford head coach - Frank Brennan

On the match:
"Frankly, I dont know how we are doing it. Playing without one of our best players and having four freshmen to begin with, and then to lose your junior team captain - our team is just younger and younger every time I turn around. I think we are doing it with smoke and mirrors at this point. But we will try it one more time tomorrow."

On Teryn Ashleys condition:
"Teryn is day-to-day. We are checking her out - she was better today. We are always hoping, but you have to play with the cards you are dealt and luckily we have depth and a lot of talent on the team. If Teryn is ready, then super. But if she is not I think we can get maximum effort and very competitive matches out of our girls.

On playing Florida in the championship:
"We played Florida at the Indoors and lost 5-4. I thought it was a real good match. I thought both teams played pretty well. They are very good. They are the defending champions. They are talented, deep, and they are playing at home. I can think of about 15 reasons why they should win and one good reason why we should win and that is we are going to be here tomorrow and we have a shot. Anything can happen; I have seen stranger performances. Miracles do happen and thats why we bother to play these matches and dont just award the trophy to the No. 1 seed."

On the strength of the two programs in the 90s:
"We have had two great programs battling it out through the years. It has really been fun. Andi is a great coach. I love to compete against him and his players are always tough. It is going to be fun tomorrow."

Stanford No. 4 player - Jennifer Heiser
"I definitely didnt want to go to doubles today against California. I have confidence in our doubles, and I had confidence if it went either way. Its just a relief that it did not go that far."

Playing UF in the championship:
"We are definitely pumped to play Florida. We are excited and we will come out strong again. We didnt get this chance last year; so it is double the excitement."

Stanford No. 1 player - Marrissa Irvin

On the match:
"Obviously, we were all ready for this match. Not only was it the semifinals, but it was California - our biggest rival. We knew we were without one of our best players and our team captain in Teryn Ashley going into the match; so we all had to focus a lot on our own singles matches. Everyone was moved up a position except for myself. All of us came out strong and it was awesome."

On the possibility of going to doubles:
"To be honest I think our team is so deep. It was definitely nerve-wracking without Teryn who is my doubles partner and our No. 2 because she had a great year. But I was confident with the singles."

Cal Head Coach Jan Brogan

On the match:

"They competed better. Weve competed really well the last two days and took advantage the depth on our team, the skill leveleverything.

"I feel like we reversed the situation like we had yesterday when we played Georgiawhere our No. 1 player was out and they played against us, and then one of Stanfords top players was out. And so here, I felt like we had this terrific opportunity to capitalize onIm sure Georgia probably felt the same way against usand we didnt. And the reason we didnt is we didnt compete as well as they did.

"I feel like (No. 2 singles player Amy) Jensen lost a match that she (shouldnt have)(her opponent Gabriela Lastra) is good, but shes a freshman. Shes not as experienced. (No. 4 singles player Clarie Curran) has beaten (her opponent Jennifer Heiser) before, and she had the ability to beat her. So, I thought it would be at least three-all going into the doubles.

"Its a disappointment in that way that we had the ability to take it into the doubles. So it was a pretty big disappointment, and Im sure the girls feel that way, too."

On Stanfords improvement throughout the season:

"I think theyve definitely played better as the season went onno question about it. When you have so many freshmangranted all of their freshman were top-ranked juniors in the United Statesafter they got over their freshman jitters, they played very well as the season went on."

On the clinching match at No. 4 singles:

"It was a great match. You cant really say somebody lost, unfortunately, Claire (Curran) lost the match. But, Jennifer (Heiser) is a really, really tough player. Shes lost very few dual matches this yearso has Claire. Theyre going to compete all the way down to the last point. I thought that was the best match of the day. Im disappointed for Claire, but Im also proud of her because she didnt quit after losing that second set. Shes a great competitorJennifer just won the last point."
