Cardinal Drops Hard-Fought Doubleheader

April 17, 1999

TUCSON - Jennie Finch's five-hit shutout, 2-0, in the second game helped give third-ranked Arizona a hard-fought softball doubleheader sweep over the 10th-ranked Stanford Cardinal (32-15). She punctuated the victory with an insurance-run solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Arizona scored the only run it needed in the third. Erika Hanson walked and eventually scored on Toni Mascarenas' groundout to put the Cats (37-9) up 1-0.

The sweep moved UA to 9-5 in Pac-10 play and dropped Stanford to 4-10 in league action.

In the first game, Nicole Giordano's RBI single to left gave Arizona an unearned run for a 3-2 victory in the bottom of the seventh. Jennie Finch led off with a single, moved to second when Erika Hanson reached on an error, then with two outs SU intentionally walked Lauren Bauer before Giordano slapped the opposite-field game-winning hit.

Stanford had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but the UA defense forced a run at the plate and Becky Lemke (20-5) struck out Robin Walker for the third out. UA loaded the bases two earlier times against loser Marcy Crouch (18-6) but couldn't bring in a run.

SU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Jessica Mendoza singled and Sarah Beeson walked. Robin Walker hit a ground ball to UA first baseman Finch, but her throw to second for a force out was late. Marcy Crouch grounded out to drive in one run and when Finch threw awkwardly back to third, another run scored.

UA tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Lindsey Collins led off with a home run to left, then with two outs Lauren Bauer hit a bunt single and scored when Stanford catcher Kellie Wiginton's late throw to first sailed down the right field line.
