Fresno, Calif.-After a disappointing loss Friday to Gonzaga, Stanford men's soccer made a rebound to win against Oakland 4-0. Stanford also walked away with the Nike Goal Rush Classic Tournament title, four All-Tournament players, and the Offensive and Defensive MVPs.
Junior forwards Brandon Garinger and Luke Rust each scored two goals. The first came in the first four minutes of play when Rust shot in an assist from junior forward Corey Woolfolk. Garinger scored the second goal of the game off an assist from freshman forward Roger Levesque. Garinger scored the third goal of the game in the second half off an assist from Woolfolk, and Rust kicked in the final goal off a deflection.
Head coach Bobby Clark said, "We went into this game in a much better frame of mind. We have a young team this year, and we're still discovering who is going to lead the team. I hope that we can look back on the loss to Gonzaga as a positive. Sometimes you need a loss as a young team to get some perspective."
This weekend, the Cardinal proved it had an entire team of leaders as Ryan Nelsen, Corey Woolfolk, Gerard Davis and Brandon Garinger were named to the eleven-member All-Tournament team. Woolfolk was named the Attacking Player of the Tournament, and junior defender Ryan Nelsen was named the Defensive Player of the Tournament.
