Men's Soccer Squad Defeats Saint Mary's

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 2 nationally-ranked Stanford men's soccer team opened it's 1999 season at home against Saint Mary's on Wednesday night with a 3-0 victory over the Gaels. The win makes the series between the Cardinal and the Gaels 17-5-1 for Stanford.

After nine shots on goal for Stanford to St. Mary's zero, the first half remained scoreless. Stanford got on the board in the second half with an assist from junior Luke Rust to junior Corey Woolfolk who scored on a one-on-one with the St. Mary's keeper Steve Reardon at 49:32.

Stanford scored its second goal of the night when Woolfolk made an assist to Rust, who beat Reardon to the right to score at 56:33. The third goal came at 65:33 when senior Gerard Davis broke away from a crowd of defenders to beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.

Stanford travels to San Jose State Sunday, Sept. 5 to take on the Spartans at Spartan Stadium. Game time is set at 7:30 p.m.
