Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's soccer team improved their record to 3-2-1 Saturday night at home with a 2-1 win against the Bradley Braves from Peoria, Ill.
The game took off in the third minute with a goal by junior forward Luke Rust off a corner kick from Andy Hemmerich. The goal against Bradley is Rust's fourth goal of the season. Bradley answered in the 18th minute as Tim Regan headed in a ball off an assist from Stephen Wylie. At halftime, the game was tied 1-1.
The game-winning goal in the second half was scored by junior Ryan Nelsen, who was moved from defender to midfielder this game. He was assisted by Derek Shanahan. Nelsen was recently named the Royal Sun and Alliance "Young Player of the Year" in New Zealand soccer.
Nelsen said, "It was a scrappy goal in a scrappy game. It basically comes down to who wants it the most, and in the end, Stanford wanted it the most."
Head coach Bobby Clark said, "Bradley is a great team, and they gave us a tough game. It's great to get back in the winning habit. The hardest thing is to break a habit. "
Stanford will host the Stanford/Nike tournament next weekend. Cal, Harvard and Dartmouth will all travel to New Maloney Field for the games on Friday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 3. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m., and Sunday's games will begin at 11:30 a.m.
