AUSTIN, Texas - No. 13 Texas upset No. 2 Stanford 12-15, 15-3, 16-14, 15-11 Friday night to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Lady Longhorns, who also beat the Cardinal in four games a year ago in the NCAA Tournament, had all five starting hitters with between 13 and 17 kills, and held Stanford (1-1) to a .184 team hitting percentage.
Stanford was led by senior outside hitter Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS), who hit .273 with a match-high 23 kills and 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Jennifer Detmer (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS) hit .350 with 18 kills and a match-high eight blocks, and sophomore middle blocker Tara Conrad (Torrance, CA/West Torrance HS) hit .391 with 12 kills. Senior outside hitter Sarah Clark (Kamuela, HI/Hawaii Prep) added a match-high 20 digs.
Texas was led by middle blocker Erin Aldrich, a two-time NCAA high jump champion, who had 17 kills, 16 digs and six blocks.
The Cardinal trailed 12-8 in the first game, but rallied with seven consecutive points to capture the set. After that, however, the Lady Longhorns turned it on, winning the second game easily. The hosts then pulled out two long, close games for the win.
Stanford was playing without freshmen Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, TX/Lamar HS), both of whom are in Canada, starting for the U.S. Junior National Team. The Americans lost to Korea 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 28-26 Friday in the quarterfinals of the Junior World Championships, and will play for fifth place Saturday and Sunday. Tom and Ivy are expected to join the Cardinal in time to play Monday night at Tulane (5:30 PDT, live on KZSU-90.1 FM).
