STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Milena Flores had 17 points, including 5-of-5 shooting from 3-point range in the first half, to lead Stanford (7-3) to an easy 83-48 non-conference win over visiting Colorado (5-6) on Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. Junior Carolyn Moos added a game-high 18 points for the Cardinal, while sophomore Bethany Donaphin had all 16 of her points in the first half and also added 11 rebounds.
The 35-point victory margin was the Cardinal's largest since a 91-53 home win over Washington State on Jan. 22, 1998. The win also gives Stanford a five-game winning streak entering its Pacific-10 Conference opener at Arizona State (7-3) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. (MT). Colorado took its only lead on a 17-footer by Jenny Roulier 15 seconds into the contest, but the Buffaloes would score just four more points over the next 11 minutes to allow the hosts to pull away.
Three-pointers by Jamie Carey and Flores and a layup by Moos over the next 2:09 gave the Cardinal an 8-2 lead it would never relinquish. Stanford later used an 11-0 run behind four inside baskets from Donaphin and another 3-pointer by Flores to take a 22-6 lead with 8:59 remaining in the first half.
Behind Donaphin, who had all 16 points of her points in the final 12:45 of the first half, Stanford extended its lead to as many as 28 points before taking a 49-23 lead into the intermission. The Cardinal went 7-of-9 from 3-point range in the first half, highlighted by Flores' 5-for-5 effort, and was 53.1 percent from the field overall (17-of-32). In addition to her 16 points, Donaphin also also had seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes as the hosts held a 23-13 advantage on the boards.
The Buffaloes cut the lead to 20 at 54-34 with 13:41 remaining, but could get no closer as the Cardinal then used an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach. Stanford led by as many as 36 points at 83-47 with 1:26 remaining.
Colorado shot just 25.0 percent from the floor in the second half (8-of-32), and finished the contest 17-of-61 (27.9 percent) from the field. Stanford also forced the Buffaloes to turn the ball over 24 times, and has now caused 74 turnovers it its last three games. The 48 points by Colorado, coupled with the 48 points Stanford allowed at Utah on Dec. 30, marks the first time since Decmber of 1996 that the Cardinal has held an opponent under 50 points in consecutive games.
