STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford gave No. 20 Oregon State a stern test, but came up on the short end of a 22-13 decision in a Pac-10 wrestling match Friday night in the Ford Center. Even though Stanford only won three matches, the team competition was in doubt until the final bout. The Cardinal falls to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in the Pac-10 with the loss. The Beavers, who posted a 28-11 Pac-10 win over UC Davis earlier in the day, improve to 8-4, 4-1.
Oregon State's Jake Huffman put the Beavers on top by winning the night's opening match at 184 pounds, but sophomore Andy Hunter (Sacramento, CA/Hiram Johnson HS) evened things up with an impressive win at 197. Stanford redshirt freshman Brad Selby (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) turned in a strong performance in his first collegiate bout but fell to OSU's Jason Cooley. Selby, a reserve offensive lineman on Stanford's Rose Bowl football team who has been practicing with the wrestling squad for only two weeks, put up a strong fight before losing 5-2 to Cooley, who is ranked eighth nationally.
Nathan Navarro picked up a win at 125 for the Beavers, but Stanford senior Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS) improved to 10-0 at 133 by recording a pin to tie the team score at 9-9. Shane Cunanan and Andy Frey posted back-to-back victories to put Oregon State ahead 15-9, then Beaver Eric Jorgensen put his No. 4 national ranking and a 21-match win streak on the line against Cardinal senior Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS). The two battled through the seven minutes, with each recording only an escape, to force overtime. Jorgensen scored with a takedown 58 seconds into the sudden victory period to stave off the upset in the dramatic duel.
Stanford senior Clay Hackerman (Houston, TX/Kincaid HS) nearly recorded a pin that would have greatly closed the score in the team contest, settling instead for a major decision at 165. With the Beavers ahead 18-13 going into the final match, OSU's Nathan Coy posted a major decision to end the match and give the Beavers the victory.
The Cardinal returns to action Saturday night, hosting Pac-10 wrestling member Portland State in the Ford Center (behind Burnham Pavilion) at 7:00 p.m. The Beavers return to action Saturday night against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo at 7:00 p.m.
