Stanford Falls to California for the Third Time This Season

Stanford, Calif. -- The Stanford men's gymnastics team tallied a score of 220.050 at the 2000 Cardinal Open today, which earned the Cardinal a victory over UC Santa Barbara, 203.200, but was short of California's score of 224.925. Stanford has a record of 2-3 for the season, while California improves to 5-0 and Santa Barbara is still searching for its first victory at 0-5.

California has defeated Stanford in three meetings this season.

Junior Jason Blitz (Tempe, AZ) led the Cardinal with a season-high all-around score of 55.950, placing Blitz in second place behind Michael Ashe of Cal who recorded a 56.025 in the three-way meet. Blitz also placed first in the parallel bars, 9.500, and took top honors on the high bars with a 9.600.

Stanford also received a pair of second place finishes from senior Jason Katsampes (Hummelstown, PA). Katsampes scored a 9.550 on the high bars and a 9.700 on the pommel horse.

Stanford gymnasts tallied a score of 37.600 on the rings, eclipsing scores of 37.025 by Cal and 33.300 by UCSB.

Stanford will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they travel to the BYU Invitational in Prove, Utah. The meet will begin at 7:00 p.m.
