STANFORD, Calif. - Five minutes had passed, and then six, and Stanfordstill had not allowed a basket. Fans were mocking beleaguered Washington Statewith chants of "You've Got No Points!"
The Cougars finally scored 6:12 into the game against No. 2 Stanford, but itwas already too late. The Cardinal had built an 11-0 lead, which grew to 22-3and eventually turned into a 63-38 victory Saturday.
Jason Collins had 14 points and Mark Madsen became the 27th Stanford playerwith 1,000 career points as the Cardinal (17-1, 6-1 Pac-10) sent the Cougars(5-12, 0-8) to their ninth straight loss - their longest skid since an 18-gamelosing streak at the end of the 1989-90 season.
"Stanford's the real deal," Washington State coach Paul Graham said."They're big, they're strong, they're quick on the perimeter, they're wellcoached and they're deep. I don't see any weaknesses at all."
Casey Jacobsen and Jarron Collins each added 10 points for Stanford, whichheld the Cougars to 26 percent shooting.
"It's a hard situation for Washington State coming in here," Stanfordcoach Mike Montgomery said. "They have no low-post guys, no back-to-the-basketguys."
Chris Crosby had 16 points for the Cougars, who lost by a big margin for thesecond straight season at Stanford. Washington State was beaten 94-45 at MaplesPavilion last season.
Crosby moved past Vince Hanson into 14th place on the Washington Statecareer scoring list with 1,167 points.
Washington State reserve forward Tyrone Evans left the game late in thefirst half after reinjuring his left knee. Evans, who missed three gamesearlier this season due to a sprained knee, apparently sprained the knee again.
The Cougars missed their first five shots of the game, and the Cardinal wereup by 11 points by the time Eddie Miller hit a jumper with 13:48 left in thefirst half. Washington State then missed its next six shots, and Stanford builtits 22-3 lead.
A 10-2 run pulled the Cougars within 24-13 with 5:50 left in the first half,but Ryan Mendez hit a 3-pointer to begin a 10-0 Stanford run and WashingtonState never got close again.
Stanford led 36-16 at halftime and built its margin to 23 points with 8:04left in the second half on a three-point play by Jason Collins. The leadreached 26 points in the closing minutes.
Madsen, who had just five points in the game, scored his 1,000th point on adunk 44 seconds into the second half.
Stanford, which won 92-62 over Washington on Thursday night, faces a muchmore difficult task next weekend when it travels to Los Angeles for gamesagainst UCLA and Southern California - both of which have been ranked thisseason.
"There's absolutely no relevance between these two teams (Washington andWashington State) and the next two teams on our schedule," Montgomery said."But we should not be tired going into next weekend at all. Everyone hasplayed, and everyone has played within himself the last two games."
