Wrestling Team Beats Portland State 19-18

Jan. 29, 2000

STANFORD, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Brad Selby (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS), wrestling in his second career match, earned a win in a tiebreaker to give Stanford a 19-18 win over Portland State Saturday night in the Ford Center. The Cardinal improves to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10 while the Vikings, a member of the Pac-10 in wrestling, fall to 3-8, 1-5.

Selby, a reserve offensive guard on Stanford's Rose Bowl football squad, has only been practicing with the wrestling team for about two weeks, and made his collegiate debut Friday night. He battled Portland State's Randy Davidson for more than nine minutes in the final match of the evening Saturday, with the Vikings holding an 18-16 lead in the team competition. Neither wrestler was able to earn a takedown, with Selby scoring on an escape three seconds into the second period, and Davidson earning his escape four seconds into the third. After a scoreless overtime period, Selby won the toss and chose the down position for the 30-second tiebreaker. Selby escaped in 15 seconds, earning Stanford three team points and the overall win, and claiming his first wrestling victory since 1998, when he was a high school senior.

The Cardinal started very strong with senior Rudy Ruiz (S. Milwaukee, WI/Thomas More HS) earning a 7-2 win at 125 pounds. Stanford senior Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS) improved to 11-0 and recorded his second pin in as many nights at 133 to put the Cardinal up 9-0. Sophomore Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR/Riverside HS) then made it 12-0 with his win at 141. Eric Arbogast cut into the lead with a technical fall for the Vikings at 149, but Cardinal senior Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) won a major decision at 157 to make it 16-5.

Mike Pierce earned a win for the Vikings at 165, and then the next four Portland State wrestlers all moved up a weight class, to allow the Vikings to avoid forfeiting the heavyweight category. Quinn Collette scored a reversal with only nine seconds left to win 6-5 at 174, then R.J. Gillespie and Jeremy Wilson posted wins to give the Vikings an 18-16 lead. Davidson, who made the 197-pound class at the pre-match weigh-in, then met Selby, who is generally right around the 285-pound limit for heavyweights. Davidson battled gamely despite giving up about 90 pounds, but could not earn the victory, and Stanford posted the overall win.

The Cardinal returns to action next Friday night, hosting Pac-10 wrestling member Cal State Fullerton in Burnham Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. That will be the Cardinal's final home meet of the year. The Vikings next compete Wednesday night at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. at 7:00 p.m.
