CLOVIS, Calif. - Fresno State won three overtime bouts and defeated Stanford 30-3 in a non-league dual Saturday afternoon at Clovis High School. The Cardinal falls to 4-5 overall while the Bulldogs improve to 12-8. Both teams have finished the dual-meet portion of their schedule.
The match started at 133 pounds, where No. 10 Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS), challenged No. 6 Paris Ruiz. Zimmerer saw his perfect season end, falling to 13-1 on the year with a 4-0 loss to Ruiz. Fresno State won the next two matches convincingly before Cardinal senior Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS), ranked 16th nationally, fell 2-1 in a tiebreaker. Three more Bulldog victories preceded Stanford's only win, a 7-3 decision at 197 pounds by sophomore Andy Hunter (Sacramento, CA/Hiram Johnson HS). Hunter had earned a pin the night before against Cal Poly. Fresno State also posted a tiebreaker win at heavyweight and an overtime victory at 125 pounds to finish the match.
The Cardinal returns to action at the Pac-10 Championships, to be hosted by UC Davis on Saturday and Sunday Feb. 26-27.
