Stanford, Calif. -- The Stanford men's volleyball team lost a hard-fought match 15-10, 14-16, 15-11, 15-12 to No. 3 Pepperdine (7-1, 5-1 MPSF) tonight at Maples Pavilion in front of 502 fans. The match lasted a season-high two hours and 50 minutes.
Stanford freshman middle blocker Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, CA) continued his streak of 30-kill matches, recording 36 on 76 total attacks. Toppel, who leads the nation in kills per game at 8.41, has 30 or more kills in the last four matches in which he has played. He missed the UC San Diego match with a sore shoulder.
As a team, the Cardinal (4-7, 4-5 MPSF) recorded season-highs in kills (107), attempts (237), digs (66), and blocks (19). Stanford hit .300 for the match, while allowing Pepperdine to a .359 hitting percentage. In the second game, Stanford hit a match-high .418 by tallying 36 kills on 67 attacks.
Junior setter Josh Lukens (San Diego, CA) had a season-high 98 assists, while sophomore outside hitter Marcus Skacel (Laguna Niguel, CA) had career-highs in kills (20), attempts (54) and digs (16).
The Cardinal will return to action tomorrow as they host No. 9 Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m.
