STANFORD, Calif. - Second-ranked Stanford University (4-0, 2-0) won five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over visiting Oregon (3-4, 0-3) in Pac-10 action on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
For the second straight day, Stanford junior Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) turned in an impressive victory at No. 6 singles. Ansari defeated David Becker (Pacific Palisades, CA/Loyola HS) 6-4, 6-1 to improve to 3-0 in duals this season and 5-2 overall. Including a 6-0, 6-0 win in Friday's dual vs. Washington, Ansari lost just five games in his two matches this weekend.
The Cardinal recorded four other straight set victories in singles competition. In the No. 1 singles match, Stanford's Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS), the No. 2 ranked singles player in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Thomas Schneiter (Worb, Switzerland/Commerce HS) 6-3, 6-3. Kim is now 20-2 overall this season and 4-0 in duals.
Oregon won one match in both singles and doubles competition, and both were upsets over highly rated competition. In the No. 1 doubles match, Oregon's Guillermo Carter (Guadalajara, Mexico) and Leslie Eisinga (Helleveetsluis, Netherlands (Segbroek HS) upset Stanford's Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) and Kim 8-6. Abrams and Kim entered the match as the top ranked doubles team in the nation. In the No. 2 singles slot, Carter upset sixth-ranked Abrams 7-6, 6-4.
Stanford returns to action when it competes in the National Team Indoors on Feb. 24-27 in Louisville, Kentucky.
