Wrestling Team Tops Fullerton 33-13 On Senior Night

Feb. 4, 2000

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford recorded three pins and won seven of 10 matches to defeat Cal State Fullerton 33-13 Saturday night in Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal improves to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the Pac-10 while the Titans, a member of the Pac-10 in wrestling, fall to 0-9, 0-4.

The Cardinal recognized its six seniors before their final home dual meet of the season, and then one of those seniors, tenth-ranked Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS), got things off to a fast start. Zimmerer improved to 12-0 on the year, recording his fifth pin in his last six matches, by putting David Rodriguez to his back in 2:22 at 133 pounds. Cardinal sophomore Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR/Riverside HS) posted his fourth pin of the year moments later at 141. A Fullerton forfeit at 149 made it 18-0 Stanford, and Cardinal senior Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS), ranked 16th nationally, extended that lead with a 6-3 decision at 157. Senior Clay Hackerman (Houston, TX/Kincaid HS) added a decision of his own at 165 to make the team score 24-0.

Senior Jason Webster recorded a pin for the Titans at 174 to get the visitors on the board. Because Fullerton coach Ardeshir Asgari was penalized a team point for arguing a referee's decision in the 165-pound bout, the team score went to 24-5. Stanford redshirt freshman Rohner Segnitz (Monte Sereno, CA/Los Gatos HS) returned after being out with an injury for several weeks to earn a decision at 184. Fullerton senior Babak Nejadmaghaddam earned a win at 197 to make it 27-8. Redshirt freshman Brad Selby (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS), wrestling in his third career match, scored his first collegiate pin in the third period at heavyweight. Selby, an offensive guard on the Cardinal football team, has only been training with the wrestling squad for three weeks. Titan freshman T.J. Hill earned a technical fall at 125 pounds in the final match of the evening.

In addition to Zimmerer, who is bidding to become the first-ever Cardinal wrestler to qualify for the NCAA Championships four times, McPherson and Hackerman, Stanford graduates three other seniors: Rudy Ruiz (S. Milwaukee, WI/Thomas More HS), a two-time NCAA qualifier and the usual starter at 125 who was out with an injury, Hyman Scott (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central HS), the backup at 149 pounds, and Zara Clayton-Niederman (Newton, MA/Roxbury Latin School), who backs up Hackerman at 165.

The Cardinal returns to action Saturday, competing at the All Cal Invitational at San Francisco State. Competition begins at 9:00 a.m.
