Women's Swimming & Diving Finishes Third At 2000 NCAA Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Stanford women's swimming & diving team finished third after the final day of the 2000 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships held at the IU Natatorium. The Cardinal closed out the three-day event with 397 team points. Georgia won its second straight NCAA championships with 490.5 points, while Arizona finished second with 472.

Stanford, which had won six of the last eight NCAA team championships entering this season and eight overall, did not win any events in the three-day event. The Cardinal did pick up two second-place finishes on the final day of competition. Shelly Ripple finished second in the 200 meter backstroke (2:08.01) behind Arizona's Beth Botsford, who broke her own American and U.S. Open records with a time of 2:06.70. Misty Hyman finished second in the 200 meter butterfly (2:06.55), while Ripple was third (2:10.21). Hyman also scored in the 200 meter backstroke with a ninth-place finish (2:08.72).

Catherine Fox took home fourth place in the 100 meter freestyle (54.94), while Jessica Foschi placed fifth in the 1500 meter freestyle (16:18.17).

Other Cardinal swimmers that scored were Gabrielle Rose (11th, 55.39) and Sylvia Bereknyei (16th, 56.20) in the 100 meter freestyle.

Stanford's 400 meter freestyle relay team finished third (3:39.77).

Three Stanford divers - Kim Powers (7th, 449.55 finals), Erin Sones (10th, 404.55 prelims) and McKenze Murphy (11th, 402.65 prelims) also scored.
