Westwood, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford women's water polo defeated MPSF Conference foe No. 3 UCLA 9-7 on Saturday, March 19. Stanford improves to 13-3 and remains unbeaten in the MPSF at 4-0. UCLA drops to 16-3 overall and 5-1 in the MPSF. All three of UCLA's losses have been to Stanford.
The Bruins took an early 4-1 lead in the second quarter, but the Cardinal answered with three goals to bring the score within one at the half.
Stanford dominated the third quarter, scoring three goals while shutting out UCLA, and taking the lead 7-5. Stanford held on to the lead and took the game 9-7.
Junior Ali Riddell, junior Kris Koblik and freshmen Julie Gardner each scored twice for the Cardinal. Sophomore Margie Dingeldein, freshman Amy Lightner and junior Kelly Shouey each scored once. Freshman Jackie Frank defended the net for the Cardinal, and made 10 saves to limit the Bruins to seven goals.
The Cardinal will have their season home opener on Thursday, March 23 when Stanford hosts Pacific at deGuerre pool at 4 pm.
