LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's basketball team upset 25th-ranked Stanford, 64-61, avenging their loss to the Cardinal earlier this year.
In front of 6,072, UCLA (16-9, 10-5 in Pac-10 play) moved to within one and a half games out of first place behind Oregon (12-4) and dropped Stanford (18-7, 11-4) into a second-place tie with Arizona, half a game out.
Senior Maylana Martin led the Bruins with a game-high 22 points, including 19 in the second half. Martin also grabbed six rebounds. Senior Janae Hubbard recorded her fifth double-double of the season, with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Nicole Kaczmarski added 14 points, including 8-8 from the free throw line, six of them coming in the last minute of the game.
UCLA jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, but Stanford countered with a 15-4 run to take a 19-12 lead at the 5:33 mark. UCLA then went on a 13-4 run of their own and took a 25-23 advantage into halftime.
The Bruins led throughout the second half, until Stanford tied it at 40 at the 11:45 mark, with a Milena Flores steal and Jamie Carey lay-up. However, that was the closest the Cardinal would get, as UCLA pulled away down the stretch.
Jamie Carey led the Cardinal with 16 points, including a fourth three-pointer as time expired. Coming into the game as the top three-point shooting team in the Pac-10, Stanford shot a season-low 17.4% for the game, including 0-8 in the first half. Lindsey Yamasaki controlled the boards in the first half, with 10 by the six-minute mark and 11 overall in the first half. She finished with 12 rebounds.
The Bruins next play on Sunday at home against California at 2:00 pm, while Stanford travels to USC.
