PALO ALTO, Calif. - Stanford women's water polo defeated fourth-ranked USC 7-6 in overtime Friday, March 3 in the Cardinal's second conference game in the season. In a game reminiscent of the National Championship game last year, which Stanford lost 7-6 in five overtimes, Friday's match saw the Trojans and the Cardinal battle through three overtimes before Stanford came away victorious.
Freshman Julie Gardner scored the winning goal to give Stanford its second MPSF win of the season and hand USC its first conference loss. Sophomore Kate Pettit led the team in scoring with three goals. Dani Bell, Kelly Shouey and Anne-Marie Keenan each contributed one goal. Goalkeeper Jackie Frank made 11 saves.
Stanford will remain on the road this weekend as they travel to Hawaii to compete in the Aloha Classic. The Cardinal will take on the University of Michigan and San Jose State on Saturday and will compete against Hawaii in the third conference game of the season on Sunday.
