STANFORD, Calif. - Former Stanford University tennis standout Jared Palmer has become the fourth Cardinal to become the top-ranked ATP doubles player in the world.
Palmer has 3,187 points in the Mar. 20 rankings, just ahead of another former Cardinal, Alex O'Brien, who is second with 2,894. Palmer joins John McEnroe (1979-84, 1989), Jim Grabb (1989, 1992-93) and Jonathan Stark (1994) as the four Stanford products to reach the No. 1 doubles ranking in the world.
Palmer, 28, has won two doubles titles this season and 15 in his career. He also owns a Grand Slam doubles title at the 1995 Australian Open with partner Richey Reneberg. At Stanford, Palmer was the NCAA Single Champion in 1991 and earned All-America honors in both '90 and '91.
Earlier this week, Palmer and O'Brien were selected to represent the United States in doubles competition at the 2000 Davis Cup on Apr. 7-9 against the Czech Republic in Inglewood, California. Palmer and O'Brien were teammates at Stanford in 1990 and 1991.
