STANFORD PUTS 15-0 MARK ON THE LINE AGAINST #1 UCLA, #18 USC: The fourth-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team (15-0 overall, 3-0 Pac-10) looks to remain the only undefeated team in Division I when it hosts national powers UCLA (16-2, 3-0) and USC (12-6, 2-1) in the Bank of the West's "Stanford Challenge" at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium ... The Cardinal hosts the top-ranked Bruins on Friday at 1:30 p.m., as UCLA tries to avenge a 4-3 loss to Stanford in the finals of the National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 27 in Louisville ... Stanford then hosts No. 18 USC on Saturday at noon in a matchup between schools that combined to win nine of the 10 NCAA team titles in the 1990's (Stanford 6, USC 3) ... The Pac-10 lead will also be up for grabs this weekend on The Farm, as the Cardinal and Bruins are tied for the conference lead at 3-0 and the Trojans are a game back at 2-1.
THE RANKINGS: Ten of the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations's top 100 players will be on display this weekend at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, as will three of the top six doubles teams ... Stanford junior Alex Kim (14-1 dual, 30-3 overall) is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation and is the highest of the 10 players in action this weekend ... Cardinal senior Geoff Abrams (13-2, 30-6) is also back in the top 10 at No. 9, while junior Scotty Scott (11-3, 13-4) is in the top 100 for the first time in his career at No. 97 ... Kim and Abrams both enter the weekend on 10-match winning streaks, while Scott has won six of his last seven ... Abrams and Kim, who have won 16 of their last 17, also make up the No. 1 doubles team in the nation ... The duo, which owns titles at the ITA All-American and the National Collegiate Classic this season, has been ranked No. 1 in the country since December.
HIPPENSTEEL RETURNS: Sophomore K.J. Hippensteel (1-0, 7-1) will make his much-awaited return to singles play on Friday after missing the last 11 weeks with a ruptured spleen brought on by a severe case of mononucleosis ... The unseeded Hippensteel won the ITA All-American Championships in Austin, Texas in October after beating six ITA top 40 foes in straight sets, and entered the winter as the top-ranked player in the nation ... In fact in the January ITA rankings, Stanford had three of the top six players in the country, with Abrams at No. 4 and Kim at No. 6 ... But in his first match since being ranked No. 1, Hippensteel suffered a ruptured spleen at the National Collegiate Classic on Jan. 14 and spent five days in a Los Angeles area hospital ... He returned to the court for light workouts in early March, and returned to doubles action on Mar. 28 ... He has won all three doubles matches with freshman David Martin since his return, and will return to the singles lineup this week ... Hippensteel and Martin were ranked fifth at the time of the injury, but dropped out of the rankings because of inactivity.
