Stanford senior third baseman John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS) has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced today. The selection is the third in Gall's career and the first time a Cardinal has won the honor this season. Stanford has had three Pac-10 Pitchers of the Week in 2000.
Gall remained on an absolute tear last week as he was 12-for-18 (.667) with three doubles, three homers and 11 RBI in four Stanford wins last week. He also scored seven runs and accumulated 24 total bases for a 1.333 slugging percentage.
Gall, who broke the school's RBI record in a game at Arizona State on April 1, also remains in hot pursuit of school records in batting average, hits and doubles. Gall regained his status as Stanford's all-time batting average leader this weekend and currently has a .364 career average, .002 ahead of second place Jack Shepard (.362, 1951-53). He is currently second at Stanford with 324 career hits and is just eight shy of moving past Stanford career record holder Paul Carey (331 career hits) and only 14 shy of breaking the Pac-10 record held by Arizona's Chip Hale (337). Gall is third on Stanford's all-time doubles list with 65 and is just three away from breaking Troy Paulsen's record of 67.
Over the last eight games, Gall is an amazing 19-33 (.576) with four doubles, six homers and 21 RBI. He has also scored 12 runs and accumulated 41 total bases for a 1.242 slugging percentage. In addition, he has four walks, a sacrifice fly, a stolen base and a .605 on base percentage.
This season, Gall leads the Cardinal with a .362 batting average and 42 RBI. He also ranks second on the team with a .615 slugging percentage and third with seven homers.
Stanford is currently ranked #5 in the nation by Baseball America. The Cardinal is 25-9 overall and has a 6-3 Pac-10 mark. Stanford is tied for second place in the Pac-10 with Arizona State and USC. All three teams trail first-place UCLA by a single game.
