This week's matchup: The top-ranked Cardinal (22-4, 8-1 MPSF) will take on the UC Davis Aggies at Davis on Friday, April 14th in Stanford's last game of the regular season. UC Davis holds a record of 18-3 coming into Friday's game, and is ranked 11th.
Stanford in the rankings: The Cardinal is currently ranked No. 1 in the collegiate polls for the week of 4/12. Stanford jumped from a third-place ranking last week after defeating top-ranked UCLA and No. 2 California in the MPSF Tournament last weekend.

Stanford at the MPSF Tournament: Stanford went 5-0 last weekend to earn the MPSF Championship title at the Conference Tournament. The Cardinal defeated No. 7 Hawaii 14-2 and No. 18 Pacific 18-3 on Friday, April 7. Junior Kris Koblik scored a team-high four goals against the Tigers. On Saturday, Stanford took a 9-6 victory over No. 6 San Diego State, with Margie Dingeldein scoring four goals. The Cardinal defeated top-ranked UCLA 7-6 to earn a berth into the Championship game against Cal. On Sunday, the Cardinal and the Golden Bears faced off for the Conference title. Julie Gardner and Kris Koblik scored two goals each to lead Stanford to a 6-4 victory and the MPSF Championship.
All-Conference honors: Sophomore driver Margie Dingeldein was named First-Team All-Conference after her stellar performance at the MPSF Championships. Dingeldein scored 10 goals for the Cardinal, including four in the 9-6 win over No. 6 San Diego State. Freshman two-meter Julie Gardner, junior defender/driver Kris Koblik and freshman goalkeeper Jackie Frank all earned Second-Team All-Conference accolades. Gardner scored 13 goals in the tournament, scoring multiple goals in all five games. Both Gardner and Koblik scored two goals in the 6-4 win over Cal.
The 2000 Season: Stanford water polo has recorded a strong season in 2000. After barely missing the national title last year, the Cardinal is on track to stay in the hunt for the national title in 2000. The Cardinal currently holds a record of 22-4 and is ranked No. 1 in the nation. Here is a recap of the matches the Cardinal has competed in so far this season.
UC San Diego Tournament 2/11-2/13 -- Stanford opened the 2000 season at the UCSD Tournament. At the three-day event, Stanford went 4-2 and took fourth place. The Cardinal defeated San Jose State 11-1, UC Santa Barbara 9-6, UC San Diego 14-1 and handed eventual tournament champion UCLA their only loss of the weekend 5-3. Stanford recorded their first loss of the season in the championship play-off game when Cal won 5-4. The cardinal then lost to USC in the consolation game 5-4 to take fourth place in the tournament.
San Jose State 2/19 -- Stanford defeated MPSF foe San Jose State 6-3 in the first conference match of the 2000 season. The Cardinal scored three times in the first quarter. Sophomore Kate Pettit, junior Hilary Gallogly and sophomore Margie Dingeldein each scored one goal to give Stanford the early lead. The Spartans got on the board in the final minutes of the first period, but could get no closer then 3-2 through the game to Stanford's lead. Pettit led the team in goals with two. Goalkeeper Jackie Frank defended the net for the Cardinal and made 13 saves.
The UC Santa Barbara Tournament 2/25-2/26 -- The Cardinal finished second at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament after falling to Bay Area rival Cal 8-7 in overtime in the championship game. Stanford defeated No. 1 UCLA 5-4 to reach the tournament championships. In the first day of the tournament, the team beat Loyola Marymount 13-2 and San Jose State 10-7.
USC 3/3 -- Stanford defeated fourth-ranked USC 7-6 in three overtimes Friday, march 3 in the Cardinal's second conference game of the season. In a game reminiscent of the National Championship game last year, which Stanford lost 7-6 in five overtimes to USC, Friday's match saw the Trojans and the Cardinal battle through three overtimes before Stanford came away victorious. Freshman Julie Gardner scored the winning goal to give Stanford its second MPSF victory of the season and hand USC its first conference loss.
Aloha Classic 3/4-3/5 -- Stanford won its first tournament in Hawaii as the Cardinal handily defeated No. 14 Michigan 15-2, No. 8 San Jose State 10-3, and No. 6 Hawaii 14-3. The game against Hawaii was also an MPSF Conference match, giving Stanford its third conference win of the season. Sophomore Margie Dingeldein was named the tournament MVP, and the MPSF Player of the Week after scoring seven goals in the three games.
UCLA 3/19 -- Despite the Bruins jumping out ahead to take a 4-1 lead in the second quarter, the Cardinal fought back to take the win. Stanford dominated the third quarter, scoring three goals while keeping UCLA scoreless. The Cardinal held on to the lead, and took the match 9-7.
Pacific 3/23 -- Stanford defeated MPSF foe Pacific 9-3 at the Cardinal's season home opener. Margie Dingeldein, Kelly Shouey and Julie Gardner each scored two goals in the win over the Tigers. Alli Henry defended the net for the Cardinal and was able to hold Pacific scoreless for the first two periods of play.
Cal 3/26 -- The Golden Bears knocked Stanford out of the race for first place in the MPSF when Cal visited the Cardinal at deGuerre pool. Cal defeated the Cardinal 6-3, making Stanford 0-3 against the Bears this season. The loss was Stanford's first in the MPSF. Dani Bell, Anne-Marie Keenan and Julie Gardner each scored one goal for Stanford.
UCSB 3/29 -- The Cardinal took an 8-1 first half lead in the 13-5 victory over the Gauchos. Margie Dingeldein scored a team and season-high six goals.
Long Beach State 3/31 -- Stanford defeated the 49ers 13-8 at deGuerre pool. The Cardinal jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven goals to the Beach's two in the first half. The 49ers attempted a comeback in the fourth period, scoring four goals, but Stanford held on to the lead to win 13-8.
San Diego State 4/1 -- In the last home game of the season, Stanford recorded a narrow 7-6 victory over the Aztecs. Julie Gardner, Margie Dingeldein and Kris Koblik each scored two goals for the Cardinal.
Aquatic Assault: Sophomore driver Margie Dingeldein leads the Cardinal in scoring with 48 goals. After scoring seven goals in the Aloha Classic to lead the team to a 3-0 record and the tournament title, Dingeldein was named the tournament MVP and MPSF Player of the Week. She led the team to a 13-5 routing of MPSF foe UC Santa Barbara with six goals. Dingeldein has scored in 21 of the team's 26 games, and has recorded multiple goals in 16 of them. Freshman two-meter set Julie Gardner has also made an immediate impact on the success of the team. She is second on the team with 45 goals, and was named the MPSF Player of the Week for the week of March 20th after scoring two timely goals to lead the Cardinal to victory over No. 3 UCLA. She scored 13 goals at the MPSF tournament, including two in the 6-4 win over Cal in the Championship game. Gardner has scored in 22 of the team's 26 games, and has scored multiple goals in 16. The Cardinal offense has recorded 242 goals this season, over twice as many as their opponents.
A Versatile Defense: Cardinal in the back of the pool have done an outstanding job on both sides of the ball. Not only have they helped the goalies limit the opposition to only 115 goals, they have assisted the offensive players in scoring 242 goals. Two-meter defender Ann-Marie Keenan is third on the team in goals scored with 24. Junior Kris Koblik is fifth on the team with 21 goals. Koblik, who plays at two-meter defender and driver, scored two goals in the 6-4 win over Cal in the MPSF Championship game. Hilary Gallogly, also a two-meter defender, is eighth on the team in goals with 14. Freshman two-meter defender Amy Lightner has recorded eight goals so far this season along with fellow frosh Nicole Huszcz.
In Goal: The Cardinal boasts two very strong defenders in the net this season. After losing four-time All-American goalkeeper Heather Crary to graduation, junior Alli Henry and redshirt freshman Jackie Frank had to step up to fill some big shoes. The two have done a great job for the Cardinal so far this season, allowing only 115 goals in 26 games and recording a goals-against average of 4.33. The opponents goalkeepers have allowed 242 goals and have a GAA of 9.11 against the Cardinal. Frank returns to Stanford after redshirting last season to train with the US National Team. She has played in 20 games for 524 minutes and has a GAA of 4.65. Henry has played in 12 games for 220 minutes, and has a GAA of 3.56.
Head Coach John Tanner: John Tanner is in his third season at the helm of the Stanford women's water polo program. In his first year as head coach in 1997, Tanner led Stanford to its best season when the Cardinal went 29-6 and finished third at the Collegiate National Championship. Last season the team ended the season with a 25-6 record, tied for first in the MPSF. The Cardinal made a run at the Collegiate National Champion title, and fell just short, losing to USC 7-6 in five overtimes, the longest game in the history of the championship. Stanford ended the 1999 season as the National Runners-up. Tanner has a coaching record at Stanford of 76-16, and a career coaching record of 223-188 including the 2000 season.
