BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Julie Gardner scored the winning goal
to lead the top-ranked Stanford women's water polo squad to a 3-2 victory
in overtime over No. 2 Cal. The Cardinal, who defeated Cal to win the
Northern California Regional Qualifier women's water polo tournament, will
advance to the National Championships, held May 5-7 in Indiana.
In the National Qualifier championship game, Stanford led 2-0 going
into the fourth period. The Golden Bears caught up to send the match into
overtime. Gardner's timely goal 1:10 into overtime finished the match and
gave Stanford the win.
Gardner scored two goals in the win over Cal. Junior Kris Koblik
scored one goal in the third period. Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Frank made
15 saves to keep the Bears scoreless in the first three periods of play.
Stanford's record improves to 25-4. The Cardinal will play in the
National Championships, held at Bloomington, Indiana May 5-7.
