OJAI, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford men's tennis team advanced three players to the singles semifinals in both the main draw and invitational events on Friday at the Pac-10 Individual Championships in Ojai. In addition, the Stanford women have two semifinalists in the main draw and one in the invitational, and through the first two days of the tournament, the Stanford men and women have combined singles record of 32-6 (men 18-2, women 14-4).
In the men's main draw, sixth-ranked Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS), eight-ranked Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) and 15th-ranked K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) all advanced with straight set wins early Friday morning. However, rain hit the Ojai are following the early matches, causing most of Friday's doubles matches to be delayed by several hours.
Kim, who is the top seed in the tournament, rolled into the semifinals with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win over 36th-ranked Brandon Kramer of UCLA. . Kim faces another Bruin - 73rd-ranked Jean-Julien Rojer - in Saturday's 11:00 a.m. semifinals. Hippensteel, who was ranked No. 1 in the country before missing nearly three months because of a ruptured spleen brought on by a severe case of mononucleosis, continued his impressive recovery by knocking off Thomas Schneiter of Oregon 7-5, 6-4. Hippensteel's opponent in Saturday morning's semifinals will be Abrams, who eliminated 75th-ranked Jean-Noel Grinda of UCLA 7-5, 6-3. Abrams has lost just 17 games in his three Pac-10 Tournament victories.
In the women's main draw, Stanford's Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ/Clifton HS) advanced to the semifinals when she won by default over teammate and doubles partner Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School). In the bottom bracket, 13th-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indianlantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) became the second Cardinal in the semifinals with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over 72nd-ranked Kara Warkentin of USC. In Saturday's 11:00 a.m. semifinals, Tokuda will face 23rd-ranked Allison Bradshaw of Arizona State and Kalvaria will meet seventh-ranked Sara Walker of UCLA.
In the men's invitational, which featured four Stanford-UCLA quarterfinal matchups, the Cardinal advanced three players to the semifinals. On Saturday at 9:30 a.m., Stanford teammates Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) and Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellinore-Kennedy HS) will meet in one semifinal and the Cardinal's David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) will face 100th-ranked Erfan Djahangiri of UCLA in the other. Ansari won in straight sets on Friday, while Lipsky and Martin each needed three sets to defeat their UCLA opponents.
In the women's invitational, senior Jennifer Heiser (Stockton, CA/Lincoln HS) continued her domination of the bottom bracket with her third consecutive straight set win. Heiser, who will play, Arizona State's Mhairi Brown on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., defeated Tiffany Brymer of USC 6-3, 6-0 in the quarters, and has lost just seven games in her three matches.
Doubles competition also opened on Friday, with Stanford's top men's and women's teams being upset. On the men's side, top-ranked Abrams and Kim fell to Alex Aybar and Jean-Noel LaCoste of Arizona 8-4, and Stanford's seventh-ranked women's duo of Granville and Tokuda were eliminated by UCLA's Annica Cooper and Petya Marinova 8-5.
