Track Squads Impressive At Drake Relays

Des Moines, Iowa - Stanford's women's distance medley relay team producedthe fastest United States outdoor time this year and also bettered theschool record to highlight the Cardinal's day on Friday before a crowdof 17,050 fans at the 91st annual Drake Relays.

The Cardinal team of Sally Glynn, Danielle Spurlock, Lindsay Hyattand Lauren Fleshman ran the winning race in a time of 11:06.23. Thatbettered the old school record of 11:14.90 set in 1996.

"We weren't really out out to get a personal best, just here to havefun," said Glynn. "The Drake Relays is a great place to run. It's agreat, great crowd. Being from Maryland (Rockville), as much as I lovethe Penn Relays, this crowd is so much more intimate and fun. Everyoneis on their feet and sharing the win with us."

Fleshman ran the anchor leg for the Cardinal. "I didn't startthinking about the record until the last lap when the announcer said Ineeded to run 70 seconds," said Fleshman. "This team works very hardevery day and it was up to me to do my part and do all I could to getthe record. I tried to use my final kick to my advantage. I haveconfidence knowing I can finish strong. I just wanted to finish on apositive note."

Fleshman also appreciated the sizable crowd at the Drake Relays.

"The Drake Relays are good for competition,"said the freshman. "Youcan tell people in the crowd here love track. It's good to have yoursport appreciated."

In the men's 4 x 800 meter relay, this race featured the second,third and fourth-best times in the 91-year history of the event.Missouri won the race in 7:16.23 which is the fastest outdoor time inthe United States this year followed by Stanford in second place at7:16.94. Missouri won the race when Derrick Peterson edged Stanford'sMichael Stember at the finish line.

"It's about competition," said Stember. "I gave it my best and hebeat me."

Stanford freshman Erin Sullivan continued her excellent season with afirst place finish in the 3,000 meters. Sullivan was timed in 9:27.66(an outdoor season-best and an NCAA provisional time) while Cardinalteammate Elena Villarreal placed fourth at 9:50.01.
