DES MOINES, Iowa - The Stanford men's distance medley relay team notonly defeated a quality field, but also posted the fastest collegiateoutdoor time this year at the 91st Drake Relays on Saturday.
The Stanford team of Michael Stember, Mark Hassell, Ryan Carroll andGabe Jennings ran the event in 9:32.86.
"This just shows that all the hard work is paying off," said Hassell."All those hours we have put in, training, it all has paid off."
Jennings echoed Hassell's remarks. "We know who we are and how goodwe really can be. Today's race proves that."
Stanford's winning time was just .01 second off the school record of9:32.85 set in 1988. That team was composed of James Cramton, BillCrowley, Dave Strang and Marc Olesen.
Just a day earlier, the Stanford women's distance medley relay teamclocked a 11:06.23, the fastest U.S. outdoor time this year and also aschool record.
The Cardinal women's 4 x 800 meter relay team of Lauren Fleshman,Malindi Elmore, Sally Glynn, and Lindsay Hyatt posted a school recordtime of 8:36.24 in finishing second to Missouri on Saturday. The oldrecord was 8:43.0 set in 1981 by the team of Andrea Dewey, AnnWotherspoon, Purea Knight, and PattiSue Plumer.
