OJAI, Calif. - Stanford's Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) will meet in the men's singles final of the Pac-10 Individual Championships after each posted straight set victories on Saturday afternoon in Ojai. The semifinal wins assures Stanford of its fourth straight Pac-10 individual men's singles title and seventh in the last 10 years.
Also advancing to championship matches for the Cardinal were Jenifer Heiser (Stockton, CA/Lincoln HS) in the women's singles invitational, Hesier and Sarah Pestieau (New York, NY/Lycee Francais de New York) in the women's doubles invitational, Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) in the men's singles invitational and Ansari and Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood HS) in the men's doubles invitational.
Abrams and Kim, who will face off on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., will be meeting in a tournament final for the third time this season. Kim is 2-0 against Abrams in tournament finals this season, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at the ITA Regionals in Seattle on Nov. 9 and 6-3, 6-2 at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Thousand Oaks on Jan. 16. Ironically, Abrams and Kim are also the No. 1 doubles team in the nation and have compiled a 32-6 record thus far this season.
In an all-Stanford semifinal, eighth-ranked Abrams extended his personal winning streak to 21 matches with a 6-2, 6-4 win over 15th-ranked K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/Inernational Academy). Abrams, who is now 41-6 on the season, has not lost a match since he dropped a three-setter to Jeff Laski of Illinois on Feb. 24 at the National Team Indoor Championships.
Kim, who is ranked sixth in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and is the top seed in this event, advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over 73rd-ranked Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA. Kim, who is now 37-6 on the season and 19-2 against Pac-10 opponents, has lost five games or less in three of his four Pac-10 Tournament victories.
In the women's singles main draw, both 13th-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indianlantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep.) and unranked Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ/Clifton HS) were eliminated in the semifinals. Tokuda was knocked off by 30th-ranked Allison Bradshaw of Arizona State 6-2, 6-4, while Kalvaria fell to seventh-ranked Sara Walker of UCLA 6-4, 6-0.
Heiser continued her quest for a second straight Pac-10 women's invitational title by posting her fourth straight convincing victory. The Cardinal senior defeated Tiffany Brymer of USC 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals, and will meet UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt in Sunday's 8:00 a.m. championship match. Heiser, who has lost just 11 games in her four wins this weekend, defeated Schmidt 6-1, 6-1 on Apr. 22 at Stanford in their only previous meeting this season.
Heiser later made it 2-for-2 on the day when she teamed with Pestieau to defeat Washington's Colleen Gray and Zuzana Stunova 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals of the women's doubles invitational. Heiser and Pestieau will meet Jacqui Boyd and Jewel Peterson of USC in Sunday's 12:30 p.m. championship match.
In the singles invitational, Ansari advanced to Sunday's 9:30 a.m. championship match with a thrilling 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over freshman teammate Carter Morris (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's HS). Ansari will meet 100th-ranked Erfan Djahangiri of UCLA in the finals, after the Bruin knocked off Stanford freshman David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the other semifinal. In their previous meeting this season, Djahangiri defeated Ansari 6-4, 6-4 on Apr. 7 at Stanford.
Ansari then teamed up with Scott later in the day to advance to the finals of the doubles invitational on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Cardinal juniors, who have won 13 of their last 14, defeated Jeremy Berman and Marius Lunde of Washington 6-0, 7-5 in Saturday's semifinals. In the finals, Ansari and Scott will be looking for their third win in four tries this season against the UCLA team of Lassi Ketola and Travis Rettenmaier.
The Cardinal was eliminated from both the main men's and women's doubles draws on Friday night. On the men's side, both top-ranked Abrams and Kim and 30th-ranked Hippensteel and Martin were knocked out in the first round, while on the women's side 24th-ranked Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) were eliminated in the second round and seventh-ranked Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School) made a first round exit.
