STANFORD, Calif. - Another important phase of the 2000 Stanford outdoor track & field season begins this week as Cardinal athletes head to the Pacific-10 Decathlon/Heptathlon Championships at the University of Oregon in Eugene, while another group competes in the Cardinal Qualifier, and another brigade heads to the Modesto Relays.
The Cardinal will send three athletes to the conference decathlon/heptathlon championships this Saturday and Sunday (May 13-14). Jason Goff is the freshman school record holder in the decathlon with 7,007 points. His sister, Joy, will compete in her third straight conference heptathlon competition (seven events). Joy has a season-best 4,937 points (#2 ranked in the Pac-10), only one point short of her career best of 4,938. Joy finished sixth at the Pac-10 meet last year with 4,683 points, and two years ago, tallied 4,931 points to finish fifth as a freshman. Julie Tinker, who redshirted last year, competed two years at the Pac-10 championships, and placed second with a career-best 5,033 points. Tinker's appearance at this weekend's conference championships will be her first heptathlon this year.
Thus far in the 2000 outdoor season, 13 Stanford track & field athletes (nine men, four women) have qualified for the NCAA Championships (May 31 - June 3) at Duke University. Fourteen athletes (six men, eight women) have NCAA provisional times or marks.
Friday at Cobb Track & Angell Field, Stanford will host the Cardinal Qualifier, bringing together a large contingent of top national and international track & field athletes attempting to qualify for the Olympic Games, the Olympic Trials and the NCAA Division I Championships.
Field events start at 3:30 p.m. with the running events at 7:00 p.m.
At last week's Cardinal Invitational, 15 athletes met the Olympic Games qualifying standard. Numerous other athletes gained U.S. Olympic Games standard, including Stanford's Gabe Jennings, who ran the fastest time by an American in the 1,500 meters this year and also set a school record with a time of 3:37.33. For his efforts, Jennings was named Pac-10 Track & Field Athlete of the Week.

Stanford has a brother-sister act in the multi-events ... Freshman Jason Goff scored 7,007 points in his first-ever collegiate decathlon at the recent Mt. Sac Relays to qualify for the Pac-10 Championships, while Jason's sister, Joy, qualified for the conference meet with a point total of 4,937, also at the Mt. Sac Relays ... The graduate student, and a transfer from Dartmouth gained entry into the NCAA's in the 10,000 meters with a time of 28:55.52 at the Stanford Invitational (3/25) ... His previous best in the 10,000 meters had been 29:38.02 ... His time is fourth-best in the Pac-10 this year.
Lauren Fleshman, Freshman, Canyon Country, Ca
Ran the third fastest time in Pac-10 history at 15:50.18 in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15) ... Her time qualified her for the NCAA's and exceeded the Olympic Trials standard ... Her time is a freshman school record, easily beating the previous best time of 16:01.03 in 1983 by Alison Wiley ... Her time is also an American junior record, besting 15:51.13 by Suzie Tuffey of North Carolina State in 1986 ... Her time is also third best overall in school history ... Ran the opening leg on the distance medley relay team which won the Drake Relays title in 11:06.23, the fastest outdoor time in the United States this year, and a school record time ... The Cardinal women's team of Sally Glynn, Danielle Spurlock, Lindsay Hyatt and Lauren Fleshman ran the winning race in a time of 11:06.23 ... That bettered the school record of 11:14.90 in 1996 ...
