EUGENE, Ore. - Joy Goff, from nearby Turner, Oregon, stormed back fromfifth place to finish second at the 2000 Pacific-10 HeptathlonChampionships on Sunday at the University of Oregon.
Goff finished with a career-best 5,133 points, easily surpassing herprevious best of 4,938 points. Goff, a junior, however, just missed theNCAA provisional qualifying point total by just 44 points.
Cardinal teammate, Julie Tinker, who was in second place after thefirst day, placed fifth with 4,972 points.
Goff collected 805 points in the final event of the day, the 800meters (2:21.36), 720 points in the javelin (42.76m), and 709 points inthe long jump (5.53m).
Tinker tallied 806 points in the 800 meters (2:21.29), 717 points inthe long jump (5.56m), but only 364 points in the javelin (24.02m).
Goff's eight team points and Tinker's four team points, givesStanford 12 points and the team lead going into the regular portion ofthe Pacific-10 Championships May 20-21 next week in Eugene.
