Stanford Women's Tennis Blanks UCLA 5-0

Malibu, Calif. - The Stanford women's tennis team defeated ninth-ranked UCLA 5-0 in straight sets on Friday, May 19 to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships, held at Pepperdine University.

Top-ranked Marissa Irvin defeated #2 Sarah Walker at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, third-ranked Cardinal freshman Laura Granville defeated #47 Annica Cooper 6-0, 6-3. Ninth-ranked Cardinal sophomore Lauren Kalvaria defeated the Bruin's 79th-ranked Amanda Basica 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and #60 Gabriela Lastra beat #77 Abigail Spears 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. At No. 6 singles, sophomore Keiko Tokuda defeated Catherine Hawley 6-1, 6-3. The No. 5 match between Stanford's Jennifer Heiser and UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt was suspended.

Senior Teryn Ashley, who is in the Stanford lineup at No. 3 singles, did not play against the Bruins due to an injury.

Stanford head coach Frank Brennan said, "This was one of our better performances. We were efficient on every court. Yesterday (against Northwestern) was a good match, and this match was another step up for us."

Stanford's record improves to 29-0 this season. The Cardinal will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, May 20 at 2 p.m. Stanford will play the winner of the Wake Forest/California match being held today at 5 p.m.
