Nevada Cruises Past Fresno State

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Nevada scored in each of the firstfive innings and jumped out to a 9-2 lead on the way to defeating FresnoState 13-5 in the losers bracket of the NCAA Regional at Stanford onSaturday. With the victory, Nevada advances to play the loser of the3:00 pm (PDT) Alabama-Stanford game at 7:00 pm (PDT) this evening.Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are eliminated from the tournament with twolosses.

It didn't take long for Nevada to get on the board as the Wolf Packscored four runs in the first half inning. Matt Ortiz doubled home JoeInglett with one out and two batters later Jarell McIntyre hit athree-run shot to right center, his second home run in the last twogames. In the second inning, Alex Rangel added a two-run double with twoouts to give Nevada a 6-0 lead. After the Wolf Pack added a run in thethird, Fresno State scored two runs in the bottom of the inning on anRBI triple by Anthony Acevedo and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Gemoll.However, the 7-2 deficit was as close as the Bulldogs would come on theafternoon.

Nevada would go on to add single runs in both the fourth and fifthinnings and later put the game away with a four-run seventh inning. Thebig blow in the seventh being a two-run home run by Inglett.Taking the win for the Wolf Pack was freshman Darrell Rasner (14-2), whogave up only two runs and six hits in 5.2 innings of work. In addition,Rasner recorded his first postseason victory as he tied the Big WestConference record for wins by a freshman.

Offensively, Ortiz led Nevada with four hits while Josh Laidlaw poundedout three hits. Joey Herrera and McIntyre added three RBI for the WolfPack. Josh Labandeira was the leading hitter for Fresno State as herecorded three hits.
