DURHAM, N.C. - Stanford University will send 18 track & field athletes (12 men, six women) who have qualified for the NCAA Championships (May 31 - June 3) at Duke University.

National Notes
Stanford's men's team has finished second the last two seasons at the NCAA Outdoor Championships ... The Cardinal men have also finished second at the NCAA Indoors the last three seasons ... During the 1990's, Stanford men's and women's track & field, and cross country teams have been among the nation's dominant teams at the NCAA's.

The graduate student, and a transfer from Dartmouth gained entry into the NCAA's in the 10,000 meters with a time of 28:55.52 at the Stanford Invitational (3/25) ... His previous best in the 10,000 meters had been 29:38.02 ... His time is sixth-best in the Pac-10 this year ... Finished fifth at the 2000 Pac-10 meet in a time of 29:47.53.

Kathleen Donoghue, Freshman, San Diego, Ca
Gained entry into the NCAA's with a leap of 13-0 1/4 in the pole vault ... That vault is a school record ... Finished seventh at the 2000 Pacific-10 Championships with a vault of 12-7 1/4.

Lauren Fleshman, Freshman, Canyon Country, Ca
An NCAA qualifier in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:21.28 ... She gained that time with a second place finish at the 2000 Pacific-10 Championships ... Also an NCAA qualifier in the 5,000 meters, but has elected to run just the 1,500 meters at the NCAA's ... Ran the third fastest time in Pac-10 history at 15:50.18 in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15) ... Her time qualified her for the NCAA's and exceeded the Olympic Trials standard ... Her time is a freshman school record, easily beating the previous best time of 16:01.03 in 1983 by Alison Wiley ... Her time is also an American junior record, besting 15:51.13 by Suzie Tuffey of North Carolina State in 1986 ... Her time is also third best overall in school history ... Her time is #1 in the Pac-10 this year ... Ran the final leg on Stanford's winning effort in the distance medley relay at the Drake Relays (4/28) ... The time of 11:06.23 was the fastest outdoor time in the United States this year, and set a school record ... She also ran the opening leg on the 4 x 800 meter relay team which posted a school record time of 8:36.24 in the finishing second to Missouri at the Drake Relays (4/29) ... For her efforts, Fleshman was named Pac-10 Track & Field Athlete of the Week ... Ran the anchor leg on Stanford's winning effort in the distance medley relay at the NCAA Indoors in a school record time of 11:01.56.

Sally Glynn, Junior, Rockville, Md
Captured the 2000 Pac-10 title in the 3,000 meters in a season-best time of 9:22.11, thus qualifying for the NCAA's ... Also an NCAA qualifier in the 5,000 meters in the 5,000 meters, but has elected to run just the 3,000 meters ... Ran a career-best 15:59.10 at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15), easily beating her previous best of 16:22.39 ... Her time in the 5,000 meters is fourth-best all-time at Stanford, and third-best in the Pac-10 this year ... Ran the opening leg on the distance medley relay team which won the Drake Relays title in 11:06.23, at the time the fastest outdoor time in the United States this year, and a school record time ... Ran the opening leg on Stanford's winning effort at the 2000 NCAA Indoors in a school record time of 11:01.56.

Brad Hauser, Senior, Kingwood, Tx
Broke the school record despite falling with 300 meters left in the 5,000 meters at the Cardinal Invitational (5/5) ... Met the U.S. Olympic qualifying standard with a career-best and school record time of 13:29.71, and only .71 seconds short of the Olympic Games standard ... His 5,000 meter time is #1 in the Pac-10 ... Captured the 2000 Pac-10 title in the 5,000 meters (13:56.40) ... Gained an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 28:52.63 in the 10,000 meters ... Gained his entry to the NCAA's at the Stanford Spring Opener (3/4) ... His 10,000 time is #3 in the Pac-10 this year behind teammates Brent Hauser (28:23.37) and Jason Balkman (28:47.82).

Ran a NCAA championship qualifying time of 13:45.54 in the 5,000 meters despite falling near the end of the race ... Earlier this year, finished second in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships ... Ran a 28:23.37 in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational (3/25), second-best in Stanford school history ... His time is #1 in the nation among collegiate runners this year ... Captured the 2000 Pac-10 title in the 10,000 meters (29:27.90).

Lindsay Hyatt, Freshman, Auburn, Ca
Gained entry into the NCAA's with a time of 2:05.64 in the 800 meters ... Placed fourth in the 800 meters at the 2000 Pacific-10 Track & Field Championships in a time of 2:07.86 ... A member of the NCAA winning indoor distance medley relay team with a school record time of 11:01.56 ... Placed seventh in the 800 meters at the NCAA Indoors with a time of 2:06.87 ... Hyatt had broken the school record in the prelims with a time of 2:05.95.

Gabe Jennings, Sophomore, Madison, Wi
Ran the fastest American time in the 1,500 meters this year at 3:37.33 at the Cardinal Invitational (5/5) ... That broke the school record of 3:39.26 set in 1988 by Marc Olesen ... For his efforts, Jennings was named Pac-10 Track & Field Athlete of the Week ... A week later, ran a 3:38.7 at the Cardinal Qualifier ... Earlier this year at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15), ran 3:40.50 ... Jennings also has an NCAA qualifying time in the 5,000 meters at 13:44.60, set at the Stanford Invitational (3/25) ... That time is third-best in Stanford track & field history ... His 5,000 meter time is #4 in the Pac-10 this year ... Ran the anchor leg on Stanford's winning distance medley relay team at the Drake Relays (4/29) ... Ran the 1,600 meters in 3:56.5, equivalent of a 3:57.6 mile ... Jennings helped lead Stanford's distance medley relay team to a time of 9:32.86, the fastest outdoor collegiate time in the nation this year ... Earlier this year, Jennings won the NCAA indoor mile title (3:59.46), less than 22 hours after helping Stanford win the NCAA indoor title in the distance medley relay in world record time of 9:28.83 ... Jennings also placed seventh in the 3,000 meters (8:04.96) at the NCAA Indoors.

Louis Luchini, Freshman, Ellsworth, Me
Ran an NCAA qualifying time of 28:43.30 at the Cardinal Invitational (5/5) ... His time is #2 all-time for a freshman and seventh-best on the varsity charts ... His time is fifth-best in the Pac-10 this year ... Placed third in the 10,000 meters (29:44.53) at the 2000 Pac-10 Championships at Oregon.Thomas Murley, Junior, Elizabethtown, KyRan a career-best 28:53.70 in the 10,000 meters to qualify for the NCAA's, the fifth-best performer in Stanford school history ... His time is fourth-best in the Pac-10 this year ... Finished sixth in the 10,000 meters (29:49.61) at the 2000 Pac-10 Championships in Eugene.

Summer Pierson, Senior, Niskayuna, NY
Met the Olympic and NCAA qualfying standard in the discus with a career-best throw of 190-9 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (4/14) ... Her throw was nearly nine feet better than her previous best ... Her throw was also second-best in school history and eighth-best in Pac-10 history ... Her throw is second-best in the Pac-10 this year ... Placed second at the 2000 Pac-10's with a throw of 177-3.

Andrew Powell, Freshman, North Easton, Ma
Gained entry into the NCAA's with a time of 3:43.1 in the 1,500 meters ... Ran the 5,000 meters at the 2000 Pacific-10 Championships with a time of 14:18.75.

Jonathon Riley, Sophomore, Brookline, Ma
A time of 13:42.96 in the 5,000 meters at the Cardinal Invitational (5/5) has pushed him into the NCAA Outdoor Championships ... His time is third-best all-time at Stanford, and #3 in the Pac-10 this year ... Finished third in the 1,500 meters (3:44.42) at the 2000 Pac-10 Championships at Oregon.

Michael Stember, Junior, Fair Oaks, Ca
Exceeded the NCAA qualifying standard in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:40.54 at the Cardinal Invitational ... His time is third-best in school history ... His 1,500 time is #2 in the nation behind teammate Gabe Jennings (3:37.33) this year ... Finished third in the 1,500 meters (3:45.20) at the 2000 Pac-10's at Oregon ... Also qualified for the NCAA's in the 800 meters with a winning time of 1:48.16 at the Bruce Drummond Invitational (4/22) in Sacramento ... The 800 meter time is #2 in the Pac-10 this year ... Finished fourth at the Pac-10's in the 800 meters (1:51.25) ... Ran the opening leg on the distance medley relay team at the Drake Relays (4/29) which posted a time of 9:32.86, the fastest outdoor collegiate time this year ... Also ran the anchor leg on the 4 x 800 relay team, which set a school record (7:16.94) at the Drake Relays (4/28) ... Earlier this year, Stember finished second to teammate Gabe Jennings in the mile (4:00.75) at the NCAA Indoor Championships ... Stember also ran the third leg on the world record breaking distance medley relay team (9:28.83) at the NCAA Indoors.

Toby Stevenson, Senior, Odessa, Tx
Has made the NCAA's for a third straight season ... The 2000 Pac-10 champion in the pole vault ... Set a Pac-10 conference, conference meet and school record, and became Stanford's first league champion in the pole vault since 1965 when he vaulted 18-9 1/4 ... His previous career-best was 18-2 1/2 ... His record-breaking vault exceeed the Olympic qualifying standard ... Earlier this year, captured second place at the NCAA Indoors with a career-vault of 18-4 1/2 ... That mark also established a new school record and met the Olympic standard.

Erin Sullivan, Freshman, Jericho, Vt
The freshman from Vermont has enjoyed a productive freshman season at Stanford ... Qualified for NCAA's in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:11.14 at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15), the eighth-best time in school history ... Her time is fifth-best in the Pac-10 this year ... At the 2000 Pac-10's, finished second in a time of 16:29.65 ... Was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 3,000 meters with a first place finish at the Drake Relays (4/28) in a time of 9:27.66 ... Ran a 9:28.05 to place third at the Pac-10's this year.

Chad Wassink, Junior, Kalispell, Mt
An NCAA participant with a throw of 226-7 in the javelin ... That mark is third-best in school history ... Placed third at the 2000 Pac-10 Championships with a throw of 217-7.

Cardinal Chatter
Stanford performed with high marks at the recent Drake Relays ... Both the men's and women's distance medley relay teams produced (at the time) the fastest United States outdoor collegiate times this year ... The Cardinal women's team of Sally Glynn, Danielle Spurlock, Lindsay Hyatt and Lauren Fleshman ran the winning race in a time of 11:06.23 ... That bettered the school record of 11:14.90 in 1996 ... The Cardinal men's team of Michael Stember, Mark Hassell, Ryan Carroll and Gabe Jennings ran a 9:32.86, just .01 second off the school record set in 1988 ... Jennings covered the final 1,600 meters in 3:56.5, the equivalent of a 3:57.6 mile ... The Cardinal women's 4 x 800 meter relay team of Fleshman, Malindi Elmore, Glynn, and Lindsay Hyatt posted a school record time of 8:36.24 ... A third school record was broken in the men's 4 x 800 meter relay when the team of Carroll, Jennings, Hassell and Stember posted a time of 7:16.94, well ahead of the old school time of 7:20.27 set in 1998 ...

During the 2000 indoor season, Stanford's men's distance medley relay team was spectacular ... The Cardinal set an American indoor record of 9:30.19 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Feb. 12 ... Stanford returned to Fayetteville on March 10 for the NCAA Indoor Championships with the same foursome of Jennings, Evan Kelty, Stember and Jonathon Riley and set the world mark of 9:28.83 ... The Cardinal women's indoor distance medley relay team also finished first at the NCAA Indoors, turning in a new school record of 11:01.56 ... Glynn, Jayna Smith, Hyatt and Fleshman comprised the winning team ... Mary Huang is the national record holder in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in Taiwan ... Huang will compete in the Asian Track & Field Championships in August ... Huang ran NCAA provisional qualifier times in the 5,000 (16:48.0) and 10,000 meters (35:15.84).

Brother-Sister
Stanford has a brother-sister act in the multi-events ... Freshman Jason Goff scored 7,007 points in his first-ever collegiate decathlon at the Mt. Sac Relays to qualify for the Pac-10 Championships, while Jason's sister, Joy, finished second at the 2000 Pac-10 Heptathlon Championships with 5,133 points, a career-best ... Jason's point total is a freshman school record and sixth-best in school history ... Joy's point total is fourth-best in school history ... The Goffs grew up in Turner, Oregon, playing a variety of sports ... Jason qualified for the Pac-10's in the javelin with a throw of 204-2 ... Joy finished sixth at the Pac-10 meet in the javelin with a season-best throw of 140-7.

Indoor Incidentals
Stanford's men's team finished second at the 2000 NCAA Indoor Championships at Arkansas ... The Cardinal men finished with 52 points, compared to Arkansas with 69.5 points ... NCAA Notes
Stanford has enjoyed much success at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships ... Twenty-six Cardinal men's athletes have won NCAA titles dating back to 1921 when Flint Hanner won the pole vault (13-6 1/4), Glenn Hartranft won the shot put (50-0) and Clifford Hoffman captured the discus (148-4) ... Nine Cardinal women athletes have won NCAA outdoor titles ... The first Stanford athletes to win national titles were Ceci Hopp in the 3,000 meters (8:57.0), and Kim Schnurpefeil in the 10,000 meters (32:36.51) in 1982.

Wallace Wade Stadium was the 1990 site of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships ... That year four Stanford athletes won All-America honors, Bill Crowley and Dave Strang in the 800 meters, Eric Mastalir in the 1,500 meters, and Peggy Odita in the heptathlon.

Pacific-10 Potpourri
The Stanford men's track & field team finished second at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships with a school record 122 1/2 points ... It was Stanford's highest finish since the 1963 conference meet at Berkeley when the Cardinal also finished second ... The Cardinal women finished third with 114 points ... It was the fourth straight year that Stanford had finished with 100 or more points ... Stanford produced five individual champions ... Toby Stevenson set a new Pac-10 conference, conference meet and school record, and became Stanford's first league champion in the pole vault since the 1965 when he vaulted 18-9 1/4 ...

Stevenson made his historic vault on his first try ... Stevenson broke the long-standing conference mark of 18-8 3/4 set by UCLA's Mike Tully in 1987 ... Stevenson also exceeded the Olympic qualifying standard of 18-4 1/2 ... Stanford's last conference champion in the pole vault was Jim Eshelman at 16-0 3/4 in 1965 in Pullman, Wa ... Sally Glynn became Stanford's second runner to win the 3,000 meters conference title in the last three seasons ... Glynn won in a time of 9:22.11 ... Brent Hauser, the ten-time All-American, captured the 10,000 meters in 29:27.90 ... This was the third time in the last four years that a Cardinal athlete had won the Pac-10 title in the 10,000 meters ...

Brad Hauser, the ten-time All-American, withstood a strong effort from Oregon's Steve Fein to win the Pac-10 title in the 5,000 meters in a time of 13:56.40 ... Gabe Jennings, who has the nation's top time in the 1,500 meters this year, led from start-to-finish to win the conference title in the 1,500 meters, only the second Stanford runner to win the 1,500 meters since the Pac-10 started sponsoring the race in 1976.
