Stanford, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the Stanford men's crew will compete in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ. The championship competition is scheduled for Thursday, June 1 through Saturday, June 3. Stanford will enter a men's varsity eight, men's freshmen four, and men's open four.
The IRA Regatta is the national championship event for men's intercollegiate rowing. Eighteen of the top 23 teams in the country are competing in this year's regatta, the 98th rendition of the event. Among the top-teams the 23rd-ranked Cardinal will face are No. 1 Cal, No. 2 Brown, No. 3 Washington, and No. 4 Princeton.
In 1999, Stanford's varsity eight finished tenth at IRA's for its highest finish since a seventh-place performance in 1993. Five of the nine members from last year's tenth-place boat are racing in the varsity eight this weekend. The Stanford Freshmen Four will seek a spot on the awards stand in 2000 after narrowly missing the bronze medal in 1999 with a fourth-place finish. Stanford did not compete in the open four competition last year.
Scheduled to compete for Stanford are:
Men's Varsity 8: Michael English, Santosh Heinrich, Bryan Hoffman, Parker Hume, Dan Matross, Nate Matter, Stuart Scollay, Russ Valdez, and Justin Virgili
