Women's Water Polo Finishes Third at National Championships

Indianapolis, IN. - The Stanford women's water polo team finished out the 2000 season with a third-place finish at the National Championships, held in Indianapolis, IN. The Cardinal defeated cross-bay rival Cal 8-5 for the third place win. Cal finishes fourth.

Sophomore Margie Dingeldein and freshman Julie Gardner scored three goals each to lead the Cardinal to the win over the Golden Bears. Juniors Dani Bell and Anne-Marie Keenan both added one goal. Freshman Jackie Frank defended the net for the Cardinal, making seven saves to limit Cal to five goals.

Stanford ends the 2000 season with a 28-5 record, the best record since women's water polo became a varsity sport. The team finished third at Nationals, and went 8-1 in MPSF Conference play which tied the Cardinal for first place in the conference. The team took first place at the Conference Tournament in April. The squad will return every player from the 2000 season in 2001, and will add Brenda Villa and Ellen Estes, who will rejoin the squad after redshirting to play with the US Olympic team, as well as three incoming freshmen.
