No. 13 Men's Soccer Battles No. 9 San Jose State To A 1-1 Draw

SAN JOSE, Calif. - - Both No. 13 Stanford and No. 9 San Jose State netted goals in the first half before battling to a 1-1 tie at Spartan Stadium. It was the first blemish on either teams' record, as the Cardinal is now 6-0-1 while the Spartans are 7-0-1.

San Jose State's Lars Lyssand put the Spartans on top 1-0 with a goal at 12:24. Jorge Martinez, who was credited with an assist, sent a ball from the right side that deflected off a Stanford defender and to Lyssand, who buried his shot to the upper left corner.

Stanford got the equalizer at 34:41 on Scott Leber's team-best eighth goal of the season. Off a Cardinal throw-in, Lee Morrison found Leber on the far post with a perfect flick, and the senior midfielder calmly headed the ball into the back of the net.

Both teams had numerous chances throughout the second half and two overtime sessions, as San Jose State finished with 16 shots and Stanford 15. Cardinal senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala produced a pair of miraculous saves in the first extra period, stopping consecutive shots from point-blank range. Zapala, who was scored upon for the first time in 2000, finished with five saves.

San Jose State netminder Chris Humphreys, who also was touched for his first goal of the season, posted five saves.

Stanford is next in action this weekend, when it hosts the 2000 Stanford/Nike Invitational at New Maloney Field. Friday's games are Cincinnati against California at 5:00 p.m. followed by Seton Hall versus the Cardinal at 7:30 p.m. Sunday pits Cal against Seton Hall at 11:00 a.m. and Stanford against Cincinnati at 1:30 p.m.
