St. Louis, MO. -- Ohio State defeated Stanford 1-0 in the Cardinal's first loss of the season. The Buckeyes (4-0) were coming off a 9-0 victory over Central Michigan. Although finishing with a 12-7 record last year, Ohio State made a strong showing early, winning its first seven games and ending the season with a fourth place finish in the Big Ten.
Stanford's defense had not been tested much this year. In the first three games of the season, the Cardinal faced 19 shots and allowed no goals. Ohio State's offense was powerful, taking 15 shots in the game. Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro tallied 10 saves. Ohio State's goal was the first one allowed on the season by Shapiro.
Ohio State scored in the first half of play on a shot by freshman Mariana Solorzano with an assist from senior Katie Hobson. Stanford was only able to take seven shots in the game after averaging 24 shots per game in the first three contests.
The Cardinal face Iowa on Monday, Sept. 4 before returning home to The Farm. The Hawkeyes will be another tough opponent as they went 19-3 in 1999 and finished first in the Big Ten with a conference record of 9-1. Stanford opens its home season on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks.
