Stanford, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team improved its record to 2-0 after defeating Oregon 8-1 at the Taube Family Tennis Center today.
The defending national champion Cardinal received outstanding performances from all six singles positions, led by freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, Ill.). Granville, ranked No. 2 in the nation, defeated Monika Gieczys of Oregon 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position to improve her season record to 13-2.
Senior All-American Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA), who played sparingly during the fall because of a reoccurring wrist injury, handled No. 61 Alina Wygonowska of Oregon in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles, Granville and sophomore partner Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) dominated Amy Juppenlatz and Janice Nyland of Oregon for an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Oregon secured its only point of the match with an 8-6 victory by Sarah Colistro and Monika Gieczys over Stanford's Jennifer Heiser (Stockton, CA) and Sarah Pestieau (New York, NY) at No. 3 doubles.
Stanford played without sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, CA). Irvin had competed at the Australian Open earlier in the week, falling to Lindsay Davenport in the second round, and had not yet returned to Stanford.
The Stanford men and women's tennis teams will compete in a double-header on Tuesday, Jan. 25 versus Hawaii. The matches will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
